Create a mind map of software

Students should be able to summarise information in diagramatic form, add to it and follow simple instructions. This task helps students practice those things. FreeMind is an excellent open source piece of software for this task and is available to download and use, both at home and school. Students should create a mind map using the following information:

a) In the centre of the Mind Map, put 'Software'.
b) Add a branch for Operating systems, and then branches coming out for: GUI, Memory management, Peripheral management, Dealing with problems, Dealing with security, E.g. Windows 7, Windows 8, OS X Maverick, Linux.
c) Add a branch for Utilities, and then branches coming out for: File operations, Screen savers, Formating, System information.
d) Add a branch for Generic software, and then branches coming out for: Can be used for many things, E.g. Word Excel Scratch.
e) Add a branch for Applications, and then branches coming out for: software that does useful things E.g. FreeMind IrfanView Word.
f) Add a branch for Licences, and then branches coming out for: Proprietary software e.g. Word, Open source software e.g. Open Office.

Now students should use a range of extra resources to add extra notes on software to their mind map. They should use their books, the notes on this website, teach-ICT.com and the BBC Bitesize site as well as others they have found for themselves.

Once their mind map has been built up, they should customise it with colour (in FreeMind, they should INSERT clouds for each branch and the FORMAT the colour of each cloud). It should then be printed out.
