Booting up your computer
What actually happens when you switch on your computer by pressing the power button? Write out the following sentences into the correct order.
Once it has fully loaded, the operating system finds the boot files. This is usually known as a POST (Power On Self Test). If the computer is healthy, the bootstrap program is loaded into RAM and run. The operating system is loaded into RAM and starts running. For example, if the keyboard is not plugged in, you will get a ‘keyboard missing’ error. Finally, once the boot files have been applied, you can start using the computer. The bootstrap program then locates the operating system on the hard drive. These are the customised settings you have set up e.g. what wallpaper to use. The BIOS program held in ROM checks to see if the computer is healthy. You press the power button to switch the computer on. If there is a problem with any of the hardware, an error is displayed on the screen.
