The memory game

A task to help students revise a topic.

1) Write on the whiteboard about 15 terms you want to revise from a topic just covered. You could write out 15 terms relating to input and output devices, or for memory and storage, or the CPU. E.g.

core, clock, Hertz, binary, machine code instruction, instruction set, word size, 32-bit processor, 64-bit processor, bit, byte, logic calculation, arithmetic calculation, memory unit, fetch-decode-execute cycle.

2) Give students 60 seconds to remember the list.

3) After 60 seconds, hide the terms on the board.

4) Students should be told that they should not write down a list of the terms they saw on the board! What they have to do is to write out the definitions of as many terms as they can remember.

5) After 10 minutes working on their own, students should be brought together to work in pairs. They should compare each other's answers and make adjustments and fill in gaps as necessary.
